The appeal filed on behalf of U.S.-Iranian reporter Roxana Saberi will now be hear by a court in Iran on Sunday, two days ahead its originally scheduled date.
Saberi has been held in Tehran’s Evin prison since January following her arrest on charges of purchasing alcohol and working without a valid press card. Before she went on trial an additional charge of spying was added and when she was found guilty by the Revolutionary Court she was sentenced to eight years in prison.
The sentencing drew an international outcry as many questioned the closed-doors trial and the legitimacy of the charges. Upon her sentencing Saberi went on a hunger strike that lasted two weeks, only ending earlier this week.
Immediately after Saberi was sentenced her attorney, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, filed an appeal that was backed by a 15-page document. Khorramshahi has said he remains confident that the 32-year-old Saberi will be acquitted.
