UK News Team Arrested in Sri Lanka, Ordered to Leave Country

A UK news team that report alleged a number of abuses in camps for displaced Tamils in Sri Lanka have been arrested and ordered to leave the country.

According to the report on camp conditions there were a number of cases involving sexual abuse, food shortages and the practice of leaving dead bodies on camp grounds. The Sri Lankan government has denied those reports and ordered the arrest of the three-member news team in the city of Trincomalee.

For more than 25 years the Tamil Tigers have been fighting for an independent homeland and that struggle has resulted in more than 70,000 deaths. The government has stepped up their efforts in crushing the Tigers and that has led to tens of thousands of displaced civilians who have fled the violence.

It is those displaced Tamils for whom the camps were opened and the UK news team was in the country to report on the conditions inside those camps. After police arrested the three they were driven to the capital Colombo where they will be forced to leave the country.
