Georgia’s President Mikhail Saakashvili has agreed to meet with opposition leaders in an attempt to end weeks of protests calling for his resignation.
Saakashvili has insisted he would not step down from the presidency before his term ends in 2013 but for the past month a protest campaign organized by a coalition of opposition parties has continued to gain supporters. Those protesters have blamed Saakashvili for botching the conflict with Russia last year and stripping the country of many of its democratic rights.
While the opposition parties have come together to protest the leadership of Saakashvili many of them still have differing opinions on how to resolve the lasting issues. Some parties want to see reforms pushed through the government while others have insisted that Saakashvili must resign.
