Colombian officials have confirmed that seven soldiers have been killed following an overnight ambush launched by leftist rebels belonging to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
The attack occurred in the rural district of Samaniego in the southwest region of the country, near the border it shares with Ecuador. While FARC has suffered some serious setback over the past year, including the death of their founder Manuel Marulanda, recent attacks have suggested the rebels are entering a new phase in their operations.
FARC has stepped up their attacks near border areas, using the territory as an easy means to slip away from security forces. Just over a week ago FARC killed eight soldiers near the border of Venezuela.
