Pope Benedict XVI Set to Tour Holy Sites in Israel

Pope Benedict XVI will continue his tour of the Middle East on Monday as he arrives in Israel where he will visit holy sites in Jerusalem, Nazareth and Bethlehem as well as several sites held sacred by Jews and Muslims.

While the Pope has stressed a desire to help bring about a lasting peace in the Middle East his presence has not been welcomed by all. Muslims have been angered by his remarks linking their faith to violence and Jews have been critical of his decision to re-admit an ex-communicated bishop who has denied many of the horrors associated with the Holocaust.

The pontiff has also heard criticism from Jews for his decision to propose sainthood for Pope Pius XII, the Catholic Church leader during the Holocaust whose apparent unwillingness to take a firm stance against the Nazis has been equated to complicity by many.

The Pope began his eight-day tour of the Middle East in Jordan where he stopped by sites closely tied to Christianity and also spoke of the importance of bridging the gap between different religions.
