Celexa Drug Safety Communication: Abuse Creates Abnormal Heart Rhythms

The FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients that the antidepressant Celexa should no longer be used at doses greater than 40 mg per day because it can cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart.

When you get changes in the electrical activity of the heart it can lead to an abnormal heart rhythm and that can be fatal. Patients that can be affected are the ones that have an underlying heart condition and those who are predisposed to low levels of potassium and magnesium in the blood.

These patients should check with their doctor to see if they fit in these categories. If they are taking Celexa make sure they take only 40mg a day. Studies did not show a benefit in the treatment of depressions at doses higher than 40 mg per day. Previously certain patients may require a dose of 60mg per day but the citalopram drug label has been changed to include the new drug dosage and recommendation. They have also included the information about the effects.

People who abuse antidepressants and other prescription drugs are particularly at risk to these effects, since they are noticeable at the high doses typically seen when the person abuses them. Prescription drug addicts who check into drug abuse rehab typically have a whole slew of health problems associated with their drug abuse.

Healthcare professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of this product. See the FDA Drug Safety Communication for additional recommendations for healthcare professionals and patients.
