U.S.-Iranian reporter Roxana Saberi has been freed from an Iranian jail following the outcome of an appeal to her eight-year sentence handed down last month.
Saberi’s original sentence was handed down after she was arrested in January and charged with buying alcohol and working without proper press credentials. The charges were later elevated to include spying and after a closed-door hearing the Revolutionary Court sentenced the 32-year-old woman to eight years in prison.
Immediately following her April conviction Saberi went on a two-week hunger strike in protest and several international leaders called for her release, calling her conviction on espionage charges baseless. Her attorney, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, filed an appeal and that was heard on Sunday with her release announced on Monday.
That release included a suspended sentence of two years and she will be allowed to leave the country. She will not be allowed to work as a journalist for five years.
