The movement to ban OxyContin is gaining momentum and our Sober LIving by the Sea which has been providing treatment for OxyContin addiction supports the illegalization of OxyContin.
A recent iPetition has been circulated to the staff of the treatment center that requests the FDA to remove OxyContin from the marketplace. Sober Living by the Sea supports the OxyContin ban as it has long bore witness to the ravages of OxyContin addiction in the young people that it treats.
OxyContin is basically a synthetic version of heroin which is one of the most addictive substances known to man. The drug has had an incredibly damaging effect on the young people in the United States who use "Oxies" as a party drug without realizing how addictive it can be.
OxyContin is also very expensive and somewhat difficult to obtain compared to other drugs (heroin for instance). This results in a widespread increase in demand for heroin on the streets of America by men and women who have become addicted to OxyContin but can no longer afford or obtain the drug.
"The drug overdoses that we are seeing have been off the charts," says Mike H, a member of Sober Living by the Sea's staff. A recent TV special called Heroin Hits Home by A&E network chronicled how in parts of Massachuessets, opiate overdose is the number one killer of teens. "While painkillers like OxyContin do have their place in our medical system, OxyContin has shown itself to be too addictive and destructive to be considered safe for anyone any longer."
