The United States has deported alleged Nazi guard John Demjanjuk to Germany where he will face charges of being an accessory to murder in the deaths of 29,000 Jews during World War II.
Demjanjuk, 89, has denied being a guard at the Sobibor Nazi death camp and maintains that he was captured by the Germans while he was in his native Ukraine and then held as a prisoner of war himself. Despite his claims of innocence U.S. agents placed Demjanjuk aboard a plane in Cleveland on Monday night.
Confined to a wheelchair Demjanjuk attempted to block the deportation on grounds that he was too frail to travel yet the U.S. Supreme Court rejected his request to intervene.
Germany had issued an arrest warrant for Demjanjuk in March and he was actually taken into custody by U.S. federal agents in April and about to be deported before he was granted a stay. That did not last long though as a three-judge panel from the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Ohio ruled that the deportation could move forward.
