U.S. Soldier Charged with Five Counts of Murder Following Attack at Military Clinic in Baghdad

The U.S. military has taken into custody Sgt. John Russell and charged the soldier with five counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault following a deadly shooting at a military counseling clinic inside Camp Liberty in Baghdad.

Russell, who had been serving with the 54th Engineering Battalion based in germany, was believed to be a patient at the clinic, which offers counseling for personal problems as well as combat stress. It is not known what set Russell off but he opened fire inside the clinic and killed three of his fellow soldiers and two doctors working at Camp Liberty.

It was the deadliest attack involving U.S. soldiers in Iraq since an April 10 roadside bomb killed five soldiers.
