Russia and Japan Sign Nuclear Energy Agreement

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Japanese counterpart Taro Aso have inked a nuclear energy agreement that will open the door for Japanese technology to make its way into Russia while more nuclear fuel is sent to Japan.

The nuclear energy co-operation agreement will also create the opportunity for joint mining and oil operations between the two countries. Tuesday’s agreement was a major breakthrough for Putin and Aso as a conflict over the ownership a group of islands had prevented any deal between the two nations in the past.

Both Putin and Aso pledged to explore “all options” regarding the four islands in question. While Russia has held control over the Southern Kurils since the end of World War II the Japanese have claimed they are the rightful owners of island, a group they call the Northern Territories.
