NBA Scores Eastern Conference Semifinals: Boston Celtics Use Late Surge to Knock Off Orlando Magic, Take 3-2 Series Lead

Glen Davis scored 22 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, Paul Pierce added 19 points, 9 boards and 8 assists and Stephon Marbury finished with 12 points in 15 minutes of action as the Boston Celtics used a 17-3 run in the final 4:30 of the game to overcome a ten-point deficit and knock of the Orlando Magic 92-88 and take a 3-2 lead in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference playoff series.

Both teams started slow as the game was knotted at 10-10 with 4:19 left in the first quarter and it was tied 14-14 with just over two minutes on the clock when the Magic went on an 8-0 spurt to grab the advantage and went into the second with a 22-16 lead. The Celtics closed to within three in the opening minutes of the second but Orlando used a 7-0 run to go up by ten. Paul Pierce pulled the Celtics to within 42-37 with a minute left but a three-pointer from Rafer Alston pushed the Magic lead up to 45-37 at the break.

Boston couldn’t make a move on Orlando in the third as the Magic stretched their lead to as many as 11 and carried a 67-59 lead into the final frame. Mickael Pietrus stretched the advantage to 14 points with 8:48 left in the game when he hit a bucket and even though the Celtics offense began to click they still trailed 85-75 with 4:43 left on the clock. Things began to turn for the Celtics when Glen Davis hit a 17-footer then followed with a 15-foot jumper and after the Magic took a timeout Pierce and Kendrick Perkins hit buckets to pull Boston to within 85-83 with 2:35 left.

Following a Rafer Alston miss the Celtics went to Ray Allen and he buried a triple to give the Celtics an 86-85 advantage with 1:20 left. Alston then missed a three-pointer and after Paul Pierce grabbed an offensive board to retain possession Eddie House was fouled and sank both free-throws to push the lead up to three. Boston then fouled Rashard Lewis with 7 seconds left and after he hit both from the stripe Ray Allen hit a pair for the Celtics. With 5 seconds on the clock the Celtics sent Dwight Howard to the line and after he hit the first he intentionally missed the second but Glen Davis grabbed the board and secured the win when he hit both free-throws.

The Boston Celtics finished the game 21-21 from the free-throw line and allowed just one point off their eight turnovers.
