Suspected Nazi War Criminal John Demjanjuk to Remain in Jail Prior to Trial

John Demjanjuk, the suspected Nazi war criminal who was deported from the United States to face charges in Germany, will remain in prison prior to his trial. Doctors have ruled that the 89-year-old Demjanjuk is fit enough to remain behind bars despite his family’s insistence that his health is failing.

Demjanjuk was deported from the United States on Tuesday following a lengthy struggle to block the move. He has argued that he was never a Nazi guard during World War II and has told officials he was taken prisoner by the Germans while in the Ukraine and kept as a prisoner of war.

Shortly after Demjanjuk’s arrival in Germany he heard charges accusing him of being an accessory to the deaths of 29,000 Jews at the Sobibor Nazi death camp in Poland.

Demjanjuk was living outside Cleveland, Ohio when Germany issued an arrest warrant for the suspected Nazi guard. In April U.S. agents arrived at his home and prepared him for deportation but he gained a stay but a later court ruling found that the deportation could move forward and on Tuesday he was placed on a plane and flown to Germany.
