U.S. Man Returns to Australia to Face Murder Charges in Wife’s Death

David Gabriel Watson voluntarily returned to Australia on Wednesday and was arrested upon arrival at Brisbane International Airport on charges that he killed his wife while scuba diving during their honeymoon in October 2003.

Watson has denied the charges and said he was returning to Australia to clear his name.

On the 11th day of their honeymoon Watson and his new wife Tina were diving and exploring a wreck off the Great Barrier Reef off Townsville, just north of Queensland, when she drowned. Prosecutors have argued that Watson cut his wife’s air supply and then held her underwater until she died; a coroner’s report has supported that claim.

According to Watson he noticed that Tina began to experience problems early in the dive and returned to the surface to summon help. That account was dismissed by prosecutors and an arrest warrant was issued in June 2008.

After Watson returned on Wednesday he was ordered held in custody until a second hearing which is scheduled for May 29.
