President Barack Obama Backtracks on Photo Release, Wants Pictures Blocked from Publication

After initially backing a court order that ruled pictures depicting alleged prisoner abuse by U.S. soldiers could be published U.S. President Barack Obama will now attempt to block the move, saying the release of photos would make the job of the military in Iraq and Afghanistan more difficult.

The about-face on the part of President Obama has angered the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) which lobbied for the release and won a court decision in Sept. 2008. The pictures were due to be released under the Freedom of Information Act on May 28.

According to White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs “The president does not believe that the strongest case regarding the release of these photos was presented to the court, and that was a case based on his concern about what the release of these would do to our national security.”

That concern was due in large part to the advice given to Obama by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, CENTCOM commander and the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq Gen. David Petraeus and Gen. Ray Odierno, a Pentagon official, all of whom urged Obama to block the publication of photos.
