At least ten people are dead after an overloaded migrant boat capsized off the coast of southern Florida on Wednesday.
Rescue officials believe the boat was carrying about 30 migrants, the majority being Haitians, when it sank off Boynton Beach, a short distance from Fort Lauderdale. The Coast Guard was able to rescue 17 people while three more were saved after being spotted by a boat in the area.
It is believed the boat was used as a smuggling operation and had departed from the Bahamas before sinking around 2:00 a.m. It was another ten hours before anybody learned of the accident, when the three people were spotted by a boat in the area.
