An early morning earthquake in Indonesia left at least 2 people dead and sent hundreds of others fleeing to the streets. The U.S. Geological survey reports the 6.6 magnitude tremor struck the North Sumatra region of Sumatra Island at 12:55 a.m. The epicenter was located about 60 miles southwest of Medan and was 68 miles deep. The earthquake was too far inland and to generate a tsunami.
Indonesian officials confirmed buildings were damaged and at least two people died. One of the causalities was a 12-year-old boy who was crushed by falling debris while lying in his bed. Indonesian Minister for Social Affairs Salim Segaf Al Jufrie expects the death toll to rise.
Tuesday’s tremor came four days after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of Alaska. The tremor struck in the Pacific Ocean about 120 miles from Atka and nearly 1,000 miles from Anchorage. No damages or injuries were reported.
