Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has travelled to Jordan to hold talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah, concentrating on the subject of an independent Palestinian state, a subject that will be the focus of Netanyahu’s visit with U.S. President Barack Obama next week.
King Abdullah has been pressing Netanyahu to support an independent Palestinian state, something the Israeli PM has refused to endorse thus far. Netanyahu will likely find the same pressure when he meets Obama on May 18 as the U.S. has been pushing for a two-state solution as well.
Following the meeting between King Abdullah and Netanyahu a statement detailing the conversation was released by the Jordanian leader’s office saying, “The king demanded the Israeli government declare its commitment to the two-state solution, accept the Arab peace initiative and take practical steps to achieve progress.”
Directly after the meeting Netanyahu flew back to Israel where he was to meet Pope Benedict XVI, another supporter of the two-state solution.
