Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich has revealed that he is battling Ewing’s Sarcoma, a cancer most often found in bone or soft tissue.
The rising senior was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 after collecting 110 tackles, six interceptions and two fumble recoveries. He was also a finalist for the Butkus Award, an honor handed out to the nation’s top linebacker.
Herzlich made a statement that was released by the school noting, “Obviously, I was shocked. I had been extremely focused on preparing for my senior season at Boston College and for life beyond that. Now, I must channel all that energy into facing my toughest opponent yet, and that is exactly what I will do.”
Herzlich is currently in Pennsylvania with his family where he is undergoing tests to determine the best course of treatment. His return to Boston College and his football career have not been discussed.
