Hydroxycut FDA Recall

New York, New York, May 1, 2009, The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned consumers to immediately stop using all Hydroxycut products due to a risk of serious liver damage. At that time, the agency had received 23 reports of serious health problems associated with Hydroxycut ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, an indicator of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant. Additionally, one death due to liver failure had been reported to the FDA.

Hydroxycut Diet Pills

Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements indicated for weight loss, as fat burners, as energy-enhancers, as low carbohydrate diet aids, and for water loss under the Iovate and MuscleTech brand names. Hydroxycut products are manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences Inc., of Oakville, Ontario and distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc. of Blasdell, N.Y.

Hydroxycut Liver Damage

Although
Hydroxycut liver damage is rare, it has been reported by patients taking Hydroxycut at the doses recommended on the bottle. Symptoms of Hydroxycut liver damage may include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes), brown urine, nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching, and loss of appetite.

In addition to liver damage, the FDA has received reports of other serious Hydroxycut side effects including seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.

Hydroxycut Recall

Three days after the FDA warned consumers to stop using Hydroxycut, Iovate issued a voluntary recall on the following 14 Hydroxycut products: 
  • Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
  • Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packet
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
  • Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
  • Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
  • Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
  • Hydroxycut 24
  • Hydroxycut Carb Control
  • Hydroxycut Natural

The recalled Hydroxycut products contain a variety of ingredients including herbal extracts. Although the FDA has not received reports of serious side effects with all of the recalled products, Iovate agreed to voluntarily recall all 14 Hydroxycut products until the FDA investigates which doses and ingredients may be harmful.
