SEC Expands to 13 as Board Accepts Texas A&M
Tuesday night the presidents of the Southeastern Conference voted to accept Texas A&M into the conference and officially expand to 13 teams. The Aggies' move to the conference could be delayed however by the threat of possible legal action taken by schools in the Big 12.
The SEC wants to know that the Big 12 will not be suing A&M for contractual interference involving a television deal that the Big 12 has signed. To this point Baylor has not said that they will not sue.
The SEC received assurance in writing on September 2 that it could accept A&M as a member, but yesterday SEC chairman Dr. Bernie Machen said, "We were notified yesterday afternoon that at least one Big 12 institution had withdrawn its previous consent and was considering legal action." He continued to say that the SEC would not consider a school for membership that had a contractual issue in leaving its last conference.
