Hugh Van Es, whose photo of the 1975 fall of Saigon
became one of the most famous images of the Vietnam War, has died. Van Es died
in Hong Kong after suffering a brain hemorrhage. He was 67.
The Dutch photographer was one of many journalists to
cover the Vietnam War. He became famous for his photograph of a helicopter
rescuing people from what many believe is the roof of the US embassy in Saigon.
“One of the best-known images of the Vietnam War shows
something other than what almost everyone thinks it does,” Van Es said of the
photograph in 2005.
