Wayman Tisdale, Former NBA Star, Dies of Cancer At 44

Wayman Tisdale, the former NBA player and college basketball star, died Friday morning after a battle with cancer. He was 44.

Tisdale, a 12-year NBA veteran, had part of his right leg amputated on Aug. 25, 2008 after doctors discovered bone cancer following a fall in his Los Angeles home. This discovery unfortunately resulted in his death months later.

Tisdale was the second pick in the 1985 NBA Draft after his career with the Oklahoma Sooners. While in college, he was the first player in the history of college basketball to be named a first-team All-American by The Associated Press during his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons.

Over his 12-year NBA career, Tisdale played for the Indiana Pacers, Sacramento Kings and the Phoenix Suns. He averaged 15.3 points and 6.1 rebounds per game over his career.

Since his retirement in 1997, Tisdale became an accomplished jazz musician as a bassist. He released eight studio albums and was awarded the Legacy Tribute Award by the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame in 2002.

Tisdale is survived by his wife Regina and their four children.
