A
group of oil militants in the Niger Delta have claimed that a hostage that they
had been holding was killed following a military attack carried out by the
Nigerian army.
While
the army has acknowledged that a militant camp had been razed they denied that
they were behind the attack. According to the Movement for the Emancipation of the
Niger Delta (MEND) the hostage, a Filipino sailor who had been captured on Thursday,
was killed by stray bullets fired by the army during that attack.
At
least another 14 hostages are believed to be held by the group, all captured on
Thursday. In response to the Friday attack MEND has declared an all-out war in the
region.
MEND
has demanded oil companies in the Niger Delta leave yet those warnings have
fallen on deaf ears. Militant groups in the Niger Delta use money from oil to
back their organization but insist their actions are or the benefit of the people.
