The Sri Lankan government has declared that the nearly three-decade long battle with the Tamil Tigers has all but ended following a military victory over the rebel forces.
Minority Tamils have been fighting for an independent homeland since the 1970s, and that fight erupted into a civil war in 1983 that has since claimed more than 70,000 lives. Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapakse had made it a point of his government to finally end the rebel movement.
That push has concerned many humanitarian groups and international leaders who have called on the military operations to use restraint to ensure Tamil civilians are not caught in the fighting. Rajapakse appeared convinced that such was restraint has been used as he declared “My government, with the total commitment of our armed forces, has in an unprecedented humanitarian operation finally defeated the LTTE militarily.”
Rajapakse was speaking in Jordan when news of the military success was made and the president stated, “I will be going back to a country that has been totally freed from the barbaric acts of the LTTE.”
