President Barack Obama has named Utah Governor Jon Huntsman as ambassador to China after declaring the Republican “the kind of leader that always puts country ahead of party.”
Huntsman, 49, speaks fluent Mandarin and has served as deputy trade representative and ambassador to Singapore while also acting as co-chair for the John McCain presidential campaign in 2008. Many inside the Republican party believed that Huntsman was a potential candidate for the 2012 presidential race.
While Obama noted the decision to name Huntsman wouldn’t be the “easiest decision to explain to some members of his party" he acknowledged the governor’s willingness to place the interests of his country ahead of those of his political affiliation. That was something Huntsman acknowledged after Obama tapped him as ambassador, stating, “I grew up understanding that the most basic responsibility one has is service to country.”
The position still requires Senate approval but Huntsman is not expected to come up against heavy opposition.
