A gay rights protest organized by about 30 campaigners was broken up by Moscow police and 20 of those activists were arrested following their defiance of a ban on their march.
The protest was organized to coincide with the popular Eurovision Song Contest, an event that has a large gay following. With Moscow hosting the event the activists, organized and led by Nikolai Alexeyev, wanted to take the opportunity to call for equal rights and fair treatment for gays and lesbians in Russia.
As the activists began to chant slogans and wave flags Moscow police moved in and began to disperse the campaigners. Nationalist and religious groups staged counter-demonstrations against the gay rights protest and those were allowed to continue.
Many of those taking part in the counter-demonstrations had warned that if the Moscow police did not break up the gay rights protest then they would take matters into their own hands.
