NBA Western Conference Playoffs Schedule: Los Angeles Lakers Host Houston Rockets in Game 7 Showdown

Nobody thought it would go more than five games yet the Los Angeles Lakers find themselves facing a Game 7 situation on Sunday as they host the Houston Rockets for the right to advance to the Western Conference finals and face the Denver Nuggets.

After moving up in their best-of-seven series 2-1 and with Yao Ming done for the season following a broken foot the Lakers were expected to roll over the Rockets but that hasn’t happened. Houston came back in Game 4 and stunned LA with blowout to even the series. The Lakers returned the favor in Game 5 with a 40-point pounding to jump back in front 3-2 but the Rockets responded with a win on their court in Game 6 to once again even the series and force LA into Sunday’s Game 7.

While the Lakers have the talent with Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and a cast of thousands it has been their discipline that has been called into question as they have appeared to take games off rather than play with purpose. As for Houston, they know they have to bring their A-game each night to compete and thus far they have done so.

The key to Houston’s run has been Aaron Brooks who has shred the Lakers defense and opened up the perimeter shooting for Shane Battier, Ron Artest and Luis Scola and if those three are hot on Sunday the Lakers could be in trouble. Los Angeles might need more than just Kobe to step up on Sunday. Nothing would make LA fans happier than to the Lakers jump to an early lead and if they do it will be because Derek Fisher and Trevor Ariza play their role.

Houston will have to limit the Lakers to one shot on Sunday and while LA has a clear size advantage the Rockets have managed to keep them off the board. Offensively, that size difference will mean the Rockets will need to hit their perimeter shots and if they can that should open the lanes for Brooks to drive more.

Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
