Roger Federer managed to knock off rival Rafael Nadal in straight sets on Sunday 6-4, 6-4, to capture the Madrid Open title and end the Spaniard’s match winning streak on clay at 33.
The win for Federer was just his second against Nadal in 11 attempts on clay and gave him his first title of the year. It should also boost his confidence for next week’s French Open, a Grand Slam that has been dominated by Nadal.
Federer didn’t exactly look primed for the win early on Sunday as he had to fight off break points in two of his first three service games but then picked up a break at 4-4 to grab the advantage and then finished the set off with his own service.
In the second set Federer broke at 2-2 to take control of the set and Nadal couldn’t find the holes in the Swiss star’s serve that were there in the opening games of the first set.
