Tamil Tigers Declare Ceasefire in Struggle Against Sri Lanka Military

The Tamil Tigers 26-year battle against Sri Lanka government forces may have come to an end as the rebels declared a ceasefire after their diminished numbers were backed into a small enclave in the northern part of the country.

On Saturday Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared victory over the Tigers while he was on a visit to Jordan. While victory was declared he did not say that the fighting had ended and despite the Tigers call for a ceasefire the government appears determined to continue the offensive until they have cleared all areas and located Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

In a statement release by the Tigers on a pro-Tamil website the rebels acknowledged, “this battle has reached its bitter end.” The statement continued, “In the past 24 hours, over 3,000 civilians lie dead on the streets while another 25,000 are critically injured with no medical attention.”

The government hasn’t confirmed those numbers and has said that the civilians that had been trapped in the northern war zone had managed to escape the fighting.

Sri Lanka’s military may be inspired to keep fighting due to the language used in the Tiger’s ceasefire statement. While appearing to accept defeat at the hands of the military the group also made clear that “no force can prevent the attainment of justice for our people.”

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) formed in 1976 and dedicated itself to fighting for an independent state for the minority Tamils. More than 70,000 people have died since that fight began and while the two sides had agreed to a ceasefire in the past Sunday’s declaration may be permanent as the Sri Lankan government appears determined to permanently wipe out the rebels.
