Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou has been facing heavy criticism from opposition supporters following his policy of engagement with China and on Sunday thousands of protesters marched to voice their disapproval on what they consider a threat to their self-rule.
The march was led by Democratic Progressive Party Chairman Tsai Ing-wen, a nationalist who has long opposed any engagement with China that would be seen as a threat to their sovereignty.
Sunday’s march comes just ahead of Ma Ying-jeou’s one year anniversary in office and with his willingness to abandon anti-Chinese policies the protests are likely to continue. China continues to claim sovereignty over Taiwan despite the islands split from the mainland following the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949.
