NBA Scores Western Conference Semifinals: Los Angeles Lakers Pound Houston Rockets in Game 7, Move on to Face Denver Nuggets

Pau Gasol scored 21 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, Kobe Bryant added 14 points, 7 boards and 5 assists and Trevor Ariza finished with 15 points and pulled 5 off the glass as the Los Angeles Lakers started quick and pounded the Houston Rockets 89-70 on Sunday to win their best-of-seven playoff series and now advance to face the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference finals.

LA opened the first quarter with an 8-0 spurt with Ariza accounting for six of those points. It didn’t get any better for the Rockets as they didn’t hit their first field goal until 7:17 had elapsed and by that point the Lakers were in front 13-4 and Derek Fisher hit back-to-back buckets to push the advantage to 17-4 before closing the frame with a 22-12 lead. Houston was able to get within nine in the opening minutes of second but LA used an 11-2 run that put them in front 35-17 with 6:22 left on the clock. The Lakers would extend their lead to as many as 25 before heading into the break with a 51-31 lead.

The third quarter was no better for the Rockets as they continued to struggle from the floor and by the end of the frame they could only cut their deficit to 19 and were showing no signs of life. Los Angeles wouldn’t let up in the final frame as they came out determined to end the game as quickly as possible and with 6:46 left in the game their lead had grown to 26 and Houston was done.

Houston shot just 36 percent from the floor and were out-rebounded 55-33.
