The
Sri Lankan military has said that their nearly three-decade long war with the Tamil
Tigers has ended and that the rebel leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, has been
killed.
Over
the past several weeks the military had been using an aggressive push to
finally end the 26-year war and that push pinned a diminished force of rebels
into a small area of jungle in the country’s northeast region. The military,
determined to finish the Tigers, didn’t let up and it was during the final battle
that Prabhakaran was shot and killed.
While
the military has declared the leader dead there have been no photos of the body
and no reporters have been able to verify the death.
Prabhakran
had led the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) since its creation as he
fought for an independent state for the minority Tamils. More than 70,000
people have died since that fight began while hundreds of thousands have been displaced.
