U.S.
President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are
holding meetings in Washington to discuss a variety of issues currently
affecting the Middle East.
Among
the topics believed to be on the table is the creation of an independent
Palestinian state, something Netanyahu has opposed in the past. Obama has stood
for the move as a means of creating a lasting peace between Israelis and
Palestinians yet the controversial issue has been blocked by nationalist
parties in Israel for some time.
During
his presidential campaign Obama focused his foreign policy agenda on
encouraging the creation of a Palestinian state as part of a peace agreement. Netanyahu
has eased his position on a Palestinian state since taking office earlier this
year but remains steadfast in his belief that several obstacles remain before
such a state could be created.
Also
on the table will be the issue of Iran and its nuclear capabilities. Israel has
called a nuclear-armed Iran a threat to its existence.
