House of Commons Speaker Michael Martin to Step Down Following Spending Scandal

For the first time in 300 years the House of Commons Speaker has effectively been forced to resign as Michael Martin announced on Tuesday his intentions to step down following a spending scandal involving MPs.

Martin acknowledged that the heavy criticism he faced regarding that spending scandal had fractured the House and that to create unity he would voluntarily step down on June 21. For the past nine years Martin had served as Speaker and he had been an MP for the past 30 but the recent controversy surrounding MP claims on expenses wiped all those years away as he faced a motion of no-confidence that could have forced him from his seat.

Martin has been targeted for his handling of the expense situation in which MPs claimed a variety of expenses including moat cleaning, second home expenses and chandeliers. Labour MP Paul Flynn attacked Martin’s involvement stating, “"He had not recognized the seriousness of the situation and... made a disastrous situation even worse by his lack of penitence, by his aggressive attitude by his attempt to blame the whistleblowers.”

In his statement before MPs on Tuesday Martin reasoned that the best thing he could do to rectify the matter was step down, telling the House, “I have always felt that the House is at its best when it is united.”
