Ethiopian Forces Said to be Back in Somalia

Ethiopian forces are said to have been spotted crossing back into Somalia, just four months after the military removed all their troops from the troubled country.

While Ethiopia has denied the claims there have been Somali residents who have claimed to have seen troops digging trenches near the border, possibly preparing to battle Islamist militants who continue to jeopardize the Western-backed government in Mogadishu.

After spending two years in Somalia fending off Islamist militants Ethiopian troops left the country in January as part of a UN-backed peace deal. The troops stayed close to the border, making it clear that if their interests were threatened they would return but according to the government they have yet to make a move.

As part of the UN peace deal more than 4,000 Ugandan and Burundian peacekeepers from the African Union were placed in Mogadishu to protect the city from Islamist militants yet they have continued to face attacks and surrounding towns have remained under militant control.
