The
NBA Draft Lottery will celebrate its 25th edition on Tuesday night
as the 14 teams who missed out on playoff action gather to see where they will
pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.
It
appears to be a foregone conclusion that Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin will be the number
one overall selection when the 2009 NBA Draft is held on June 25 yet what
uniform he puts on will be determined by Tuesday night’s lottery order. The
Sacramento Kings have the best shot at landing the forward after posting the worst
record in the regular season. Sacramento stands a 25% chance at the number one
spot while the Washington Wizards and Los Angeles Clippers, equally awful in the
regular season, stand a 17.8% and 17.7% shot at the top pick respectively.
While
Griffin is the consensus number one the number two and three picks could be
equally impressive with Spain’s Ricky Rubio and Arizona State’s James Harden
each charting high by NBA evaluators.
Tuesday
nights draft lottery will only position the top three picks so while Sacramento
has the best shot at the number one pick they could also fall to number four if
the ping-pong balls don’t bounce their way. Because of the way the draft
lottery has been set up the Phoenix Suns, who finished the regular season
46-36, could still land the number one pick. The likelihood of that is just
.05% but they do have a chance.
Of
course Griffin, Rubio and Harden aren’t the only names attracting attention in the
2009 NBA Draft as Stephon Curry, Hasheem Thabeet, Jordan Hill, DeJuan Blair,
Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings and DeMar DeRozan have all been called lottery
picks.
