NBA Draft Lottery: Los Angeles Clippers Win Battle of Ping Pong Balls, Earn Right to Select Blake Griffin Number One
The Los Angeles Clippers entered the NBA Draft Lottery with the third best shot at grabbing the number one selection for the 2009 NBA Draft in June but fortune shined on the troubled franchise as their ping-pong ball came up number one thus winning the sweepstakes for Oklahoma’s forward Blake Griffin.
While Griffin isn’t a guarantee to go number one it would be a huge surprise if the Clippers didn’t take the 6-10, 245-pound 20-year-old who collected 30 double-doubles last year.
It was a rough night for the Sacramento Kings who entered the night with the best shot at taking the number-one pick but didn’t see their ping pong ball rise and will now select fourth by virtue of having the worst record during the regular season. As the NBA Draft Lottery goes only the top three picks are determined by the ping pong ball, the rest of the selection falls in order of record.
At the expense of the Kings the Memphis Grizzlies got to celebrate as they snagged the number two selection, jumping from the sixth spot prior to the lottery, which could open the door for Ricky Rubio or James Harden to enter.
The Oklahoma City Thunder will select third, jumping up one spot from the position they wer ein prior to the draft selection.
