A military transport plane carrying Indonesian soldiers and their families crashed on the island of Java on Wednesday, slamming into a village and wiping out houses while killing at least 97 people with that death toll expected to rise.
The military plane, a C-130 Hercules, was carrying around 110 passengers and crew with ten children believed to have been on board. It was scheduled to land at Iswahyudi air force base but missed the strip and crashed directly into the village of Geplak.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion while the plane was still in the air and then saw the plane split in two before nose-diving into the village.
There have been no reports on what caused the plane to miss its landing or what caused the loud explosion prior to the crash.
