The
United Nations is ready to move forward with their inquiry into alleged war
crimes committed during the recent Gaza conflict in which Israel launched a massive
offensive against Palestinians in response to Hamas attacks.
Israel
has already held their own inquiry into the conflict and ruled that the military
acted within the laws of war. They have shown no willingness to take part in a
second inquiry conducted by the UN, saying the international body had a bias
against them.
As
part of the inquiry the UN would investigate several incidents in which Israel
was accused of firing on civilians and using chemical gas. The investigation would
also examine Hamas tactics, many of which led to Israel entering Gaza and
conducting the 22-day attack that ended on January 18.
A
reported 1,300 Palestinians died in the attacks but the number of civilian
deaths has been argued by Palestinians and Israelis. There were ten Israeli soldiers
and three civilians killed as well.
