Iran Test Fires Mid-Range Surface-to-Surface Missile

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has confirmed that his country’s military has successfully test launched a mid-range surface-to-surface missile.

Ahmadinejad broke news of the test launch while addressing a crowd gathered in Semnan saying, “The defense minister [Mohammed Najjar] told me today that we launched a Sajjil-2 missile, which is a two-stage missile and it has reached the intended target.”

The missile, using solid fuel, was launched from Semnan and was believed to have traveled about 1,200 miles before striking that intended target.

Iran has said their missile development program was intended solely for defense purposes yet many in the international community believe those missiles could be used to launch nuclear attacks, specifically at Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf.
