The Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to lose a game in the 2009 NBA playoffs, having swept both the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks in the first two rounds, and on Wednesday night they will begin their latest challenge as the host the Orlando Magic in Game 1 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference finals.
Everybody has pointed to LeBron James as the reason for Cleveland’s success but he has had plenty of support during the Cavaliers run and he will need that cast to step up on Wednesday if they are to hold off the Magic. That may mean shaking off some rust as the Cavaliers haven’t played since May 11 when they finished their sweep of the Hawks. In comparison the Magic just wrapped up their series with the Boston Celtics on Sunday.
While LeBron has been sensational throughout the playoffs it has been his ability to include all of his teammates on offensive end of the court that has made a difference. LeBron has been able to get scoring help from Delonte West, Zydrunas Ilgauskas and Mo Williams while Ilgauskas and Anderson Varejao have been a big help on the boards.
The Magic have been the model of balance as Orlando has relied upon more than just Dwight Howard to reach the Eastern Conference finals. While Howard has continued to dominate the glass Orlando hasn’t burdened their center with the need to score as much. That scoring load has been carried by Hedo Turkoglu, Rashard Lewis, Rafer Alston and company and when they are hitting from the perimeter the Magic are tough to beat.
Cleveland will certainly look to neutralize Howard on the offensive end but they will also need to put pressure on Turkoglu and Lewis to keep them from getting hot. Orlando will do what they can to manage LeBron and they will likely concede the points and try to hold down his assists and rebounds, the two areas he has excelled in during the playoffs.
During the regular season the Magic managed to take two out of three from the Cavaliers but both those games were in Orlando. Cleveland posted the best home-record in the NBA at 39-2 and have added another four wins on their court during the playoffs.
The series could come down to how well the two teams hit their free-throws as both were among the worst at the line during the regular season. Orlando was actually at the bottom, hitting just 71 percent while Cleveland wasn’t much better at 75 percent.
Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. ET.
