Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, fresh off his three-day visit with U.S. President Barack Obama, has said he is ready to begin peace talks with Palestinians and Syria.
While Netanyahu has backed the peace talk process he has remained non-committal on the idea of an independent Palestinian state, something he was pressed to endorse while in Washington. Netanyahu has said that any peace deal would have to offer a solution to Israel’s security concerns.
Netanyahu did say Israel was ready to live “side by side” with Palestinians but that has been as close as he has come to agreeing to a two-state solution. Upon arriving at Ben-Gurion airport on Wednesday Netanyahu stated that he had agreed to begin peace talks and because of that agreement he was willing to sit with Palestinians as well as Arab states.
The PM appeared more determined to press for concessions from Palestinians and those Arab states for a peace deal to be struck while never entertaining the idea of an independent Palestinian state if those concessions were made.
