John Wall, Nation's Top HS Basketball Player, Commits to Kentucky Wildcats

John Wall, the nation’s top high school player, announced Tuesday that he will attend the University of Kentucky.

Wall, a 6-foot-4 point guard from Word of God Academy in Raleigh, NC, selected the Wildcats over Memphis, Florida, Duke, Baylor, Miami, and North Carolina.

"It's been tough," said Wall to Rivals.com. "Coach Haith has been great. He did a great job recruiting me. And then the two coaches at Duke and Florida came in late, but made up a lot of ground in recruiting me. But mainly, it was Kentucky and Miami.”

Wall’s commitment was new head coach John Calipari’s biggest coup in what is now solidified as the nation’s top recruiting class for 2009. Wall joins a recruiting class that features four top 25 players (all five-star prospects), a top 40 player and a top five junior college player.

The class is one of the best recruiting classes in recent years, if not all-time, as Wall joins DeMarcus Cousins (No. 3), Daniel Orton (No. 22), Eric Bledsoe (No. 23), Jon Hood (No. 40) and Darnell Dodson. Wall, Bledsoe and Cousins are still waiting to see if they have the adequate scores on their standardized tests to qualify.

Months ago, while Calipari was at Memphis, Wall announced that Memphis was his top school. At the time, Memphis had two of the top three players in the nation already committed: Xavier Henry and DeMarcus Cousins.

However, the following months caused a lot of changes in his recruiting process. First, Calipari left the Tigers to become the coach at UK. Secondly, Xavier Henry bolted from both Memphis and UK, signing with Kansas. Third, Eric Bledsoe, the nation’s No. 3 point guard according to Rivals.com, committed to Kentucky, causing a ripple since Wall and Bledsoe play the same position.

Throughout these changes, Wall was arrested and charged with breaking and entering a home in Raleigh, NC. The arrest, which happened after Wall and some friends were caught leaving an abandoned house, caused speculation that Wall might lose some interest from his top schools.

Wall, the Gatorade Player of the Year in North Carolina, has been the nation’s top player for the class of 2009 by Rivals.com for over a year, and is unanimously considered the nation’s top point guard. Overall, he is ranked No. 5 in the ESPN100. Click the following link to view video highlights of John Wall.
