In
one of his first acts after taking office President Barack Obama ordered the prison
camp at Guantanamo Bay be closed but on Wednesday those plans were hit with a
serious setback as the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly voted to refuse funding for
such a move.
The
Senate voted 90-6 to block the transfer of 240 inmates held at Guantanamo and refused
to release $80 million to close the camp.
Obama’s
plan to see the camp closed by January 2010 has been cause for concern for many
Americans who have protested the transportation of detainees into U.S. prisons.
According to Mitch McConnell, the leading Republican in the Senate, the White
House needed to create a more reasonable plan concerning the closing and until
that happened there would be no funding.
There
has been serious concern regarding the rights of those detainees once they land
on U.S. soil and whether those rights could lead to them being released on
American streets.
