Car Bomb Blast in Baghdad Kills at least 34, More than 70 Injured

A car bomb detonated just outside a popular restaurant in northwest Baghdad on Wednesday evening, killing at least 34 people and leaving more than 70 injured.

According to reports the car had been parked in an area surrounded by restaurants and retail shops of a mainly Shia neighborhood and the blast occurred at an hour in which the streets and shops were filled with people.

The U.S. still plans to go ahead with their withdrawal of troops from Iraqi cities by the end of June and many now fear that action will only lead to an increase of violence. Both the U.S. military and Iraqi government have tried to downplay those fears but because Wednesday’s attack targeted a Shia neighborhood it has raised concern that sectarian violence could be returning.
