College Basketball Recruiting: Lance Stephenson Still Undecided Despite Deadline

Lance Stephenson is still undecided as time runs out to announce his college decision on Wednesday, the NCAA deadline for college basketball.

Last year, the NCAA extended the final day for players to commit, making May 20 the final National Signing Day for basketball.

Stephenson, one of the nation's most coveted high school basketball players, is reportedly deciding between Memphis and Arizona, with St. John's and late-comer Florida International waiting in the wings.

Stephenson, whose nickname is "Born Ready," has been one of the most recognizable names in high school basketball since he was in middle school. Over his four year career, he became the first player in New York history to win four consecutive PSAL titles and became the all-time leading scorer in state history, surpassing former Lincoln star Sebastian Telfair. Telfair previously held the record for most titles in a career also with three.

This season, Stephenson, who is ranked No. 11 in the nation by Rivals.com, averaged 31.9 points, 12.7 rebounds and 2.4 assists during the regular season.

The recruitment for Stephenson, a 6-foot-6 guard from the storied Lincoln H.S. in Brooklyn, has not been a smooth one. In March, he listed Maryland, St. John's, Memphis and Kansas as his top schools. He was set to announce his college decision at the McDonald's All-American game on March 31, but decided against it.

The very next day, Memphis head coach John Calipari left the Tigers for Kentucky and Memphis commit Xavier Henry, the nation's top shooting guard, reliquinshed his letter-of-intent and commit to the Jayhawks soon thereafter.

Henry's commitment dropped Kansas from Stephenson's list, but Memphis remained. However, Maryland and St. John's were eliminated as well, for no public reasons. Arizona then got into the picture last month with the hiring of Xavier coach Sean Miller. Stephenson is also dealing with a sexual assault case, in which the hearing has been moved to

It is uncertain if Stephenson will be penalized for a late commitment or he will commit before midnight tonight. Europe is also an option after Brandon Jennings bolted from Arizona to play in Italy this past season. Like Jennings, it is uncertain if Stephenson will qualify academically.

In addition, fellow five-star prospect Latavious Williams is also still undecided. Williams, a 6-foot-7 forward from Christian Life Center in Humble, TX, is deciding between Georgetown, Memphis and Florida International. Williams recently visited Georgetown and reportedly "loved it", according to Rivals.com. The visit was Williams' second trip to Georgetown, which looks like the leader for him.
