United Democratic Front party leader Bakili Muluzi has acknowledged that Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has won the country’s recent election yet the coalition with which his party is a part of has yet to concede defeat.
The UDF joined forces with the Malawi Congress Party in an effort to unseat the incumbent Mutharika but the 75-year-old former World Bank official had 1.3 million votes with 40 percent of the votes counted. That is significantly higher than the 500,000 votes attributed to John Tembo, the leader of the MCP and presidential candidate for the coalition.
Tembo has yet to admit defeat and has already challenged the early results. There has been widespread criticism concerning the involvement of state media in the election and is obvious partisanship for the incumbent Mutharika.
Despite Tembo’s refusal to concede the UDF issued a statement saying, “The United Democratic Front party and its chairman wishes the president well as he governs the country in the next five years.” Muluzi had already served two terms as president and was not eligible to run for a third.
