NBA Western Conference Finals Schedule: Denver Nuggets Look to Even Series with Los Angeles Lakers

The Denver Nuggets certainly feel like they let one slip away on Tuesday night after seeing a seven-point fourth quarter lead turn into a 105-103 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals. They’ll look to even the series on Thursday night as they play Game 2 in LA.

Denver can point to a number of reasons for that collapse on Tuesday as they were beaten on the glass 46-37 and were dismal from the free-throw line, hitting just 23-35 for a 65 percent clip. Offensively the Nuggets relied on Carmelo Anthony and he came through with 39 points while they also had solid performances from Kenyon Martin and Nene. Outside of Carmelo the Nuggets perimeter game was awful as J.R. Smith and Chauncey Billups combined to shoot 7-20 on the night.

Defensively the Nuggets were able to neutralize the post players of the Lakers as Pau Gasol, Lamar Odom and Andrew Bynum combined to score just 26 points but they couldn’t do anything to stop Kobe Bryant who finished with 40 points and controlled the game late in the fourth. LA also made the most of their time on the free-throw line as they hit 20-24 from the stripe.

Perhaps most damaging to the Nuggets was the mental mistakes late in the game as they committed unnecessary fouls and turned the ball over on an in-bounds pass that all but sealed the game for the Lakers.

Tip-off for Game 2 is set for 9:00 p.m. ET.
