Remains Found in Illinois Could Be Lisa Stebic or Stacy Peterson

Skeletal remains of a woman was found on the south bank of the Des Plaines River Wednesday, sparking speculation it could be the remains of either Lisa Stebic or Stacy Peterson.

An autopsy was being conducted on the “partial skeletal remains” Thursday. The remains were found by a marine cleanup crew.

The discovery sparked reports that the body could be that of Lisa Stebic, who went missing in April 2007, or Stacy Peterson, who went missing in October 2007. Both women lived within 30 miles of where the body was found

Stebic disappeared April 30, the same day she petitioned for her husband Craig Stebic to be evicted from their home. Craig is suspected in her disappearance.

Peterson disappeared on October 31. Her husband Drew Peterson, a former police officer, is a suspect in her death. He was arrested earlier this month and charged in the 2004 murder of his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Drew has maintained his innocence in both cases, claiming Stacy left him for another man and he had nothing to do with Kathleen’s “accidental” drowning.
